About Italian Citizenship by Marriage

Being married to or in a civil relationship with an Italian citizen makes you eligible to apply for Italian citizenship by marriage so long as you meet the qualifying criteria listed below.

  1. If your spouse or partner is an Italian citizen and you reside in Italy, you can apply for Italian citizenship after 2 years from the date of marriage or civil union. Or it can be reduced to 1 year if you have children.

  2. If your spouse or partner is an Italian citizen and you two reside outside of Italy, you can apply for Italian citizenship after 3 years from the date of marriage or civil union. Or it can be reduced to 18 months if you have children under the legal age of 18.

  • Your marriage or civil union must have been registered with the relevant Italian municipality; 
  • Your partner or spouse is AIRE registered; 
  • An applicant must pass an Italian language tes,. i.e. Your Italian language level must be at least at the B1 level. It represents a low-intermediate level on The Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) lists. Those, however, (i) who have a long-term EU residence permit (ii) who are already living in Italy and comply with the Integration Agreement provisions, or (iii) who have a qualification from an Italian state school or state-recognised private school are exempt from this requirement.

* Please note foreign women who married an Italian man before April 26, 1983, obtained Italian citizenship automatically on the date of the marriage. If your case falls under this category, contact us for further information on how to proceed with your application.
