About Italian Citizenship by Residency

Individuals who have legally resided in Italy for a certain period are entitled to apply for Italian citizenship by residency. The cases are various depending on some factors, though.

Normally, applications for naturalisation can be filed after ten years of legal residency in Italy. The applicants must prove that their immigration complies with immigration law and their Italian taxation throughout this period.

The term (10 years) can be reduced in the following cases:

  • EU citizens benefit from a reduced term, i.e. 4 years.

  • Foreign nationals whose parents or grandparents were Italian citizens by birth can apply for Italian citizenship by residency after only 3 years.

  • The term for foreign nationals who have worked for the Italian State is 5 years.

What people say?

Excellent service from Palazzo Law Boutique

I have used Palazzo Law over the last year in connection with an application of an Italian passport. Davide has been more than helpful at every step of the process. Covid restrictions have meant it has not been a straightforward matter; but he has always been available to assist with any questions and anxieties; genuinely patient, polite and supportive. My siblings and partner plan to use Palazzo Law when making their own applications at my recommendation.
