If you have legally lived in Italy, your family has the right to come to Italy and live with you regardless of your nationality.

Non-EU citizen

If the applicant meets requirements such as proof of financial and the applicant’s family members meet the requirements below, the whole family is eligible to apply for residence permits. 

  • Eligibility requirements for the applicant’s family members
  1. The applicants’ spouse and legal age are over 18
  2. If children are under 18, one of the requirements is consent from both parents.
  3. If children are over 18 and are not financially independent, only when the children have a disability will be eligible for it.
  4. The applicant’s parents need financial support and don’t have other children.
  5. The applicant’s parents are aged over 65 and need financial support due to their serious health reasons. And the applicant is the only child to support them.

EU citizen

If the applicant’s family is also EU citizens and satisfied certain requirements below, they are eligible to apply for a long-term residence permit.  

  • Eligibility requirements for the applicant’s family members
  1. The applicants’ spouse and legal age are over 18
  2. The applicant’s partner is a registered in union with an EU/EEA citizen.
  3. The applicant’s children are aged under 21 or are not financially independent.
  4. The applicant’s or spouse’s or partner’s parents are not financially independent.

Italian Permanent Residency

If you have legally lived in Italy for more than 5 years, you are able to apply for permanent residency in Italy regardless of your nationality.

Requirements for Non-EU citizens

  1. The applicant has to live in Italy for at least 5 years.
  2. The proof of minimum income and the income should not be less than an annual amount of the welfare allowance.
  3. A certificate of police clearance.
  4. A certificate of Italian language test equivalent to the A2 level.
  5. Proof of having accommodation.

Italian Permanent Residency for EU/EEA/EFTA citizens

If any EU citizens want to have a long-term residency for more than 3 months, they have to register with local authorities.

EEA/EFTA citizens have the same rights as EU citizens.

Converting Student Permit to Work Permit

You are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week, and 1,040 hours a year with a valid study permit in Italy.

After your study permit expires, if you want a full-time work or to stay longer in Italy, you need to apply for an employment or self-employment permit.

Eligibility

  • If you have a valid study permit and got a full-time job offer, you can apply for a residence permit.
  • If you have a valid study permit and meet all the requirements for self-employment in Italy, you can apply for a residence permit.
